Salik Foundation Privacy Policy
Salik Foundation prints and freely distributes the Qur'an to non-Muslims, new Muslims and seekers across Canada, the USA and abroad. This policy explains, in plain language, how personal information is handled in connection with salikfoundation.com. The short version: the only form of our own is the volunteer sign-up form at salikfoundation.com/volunteer, and it collects only what you choose to send us so we can organise volunteering with you. Apart from that, the website collects no personal information about you: we set no cookies of our own, we use no analytics or advertising trackers, and the site stores nothing about you in your browser. Donations go through Zeffy's form, which is handled entirely by Zeffy, and our host Cloudflare keeps ordinary server logs, as every web host does. If you choose to write to us by email, we handle that email as described below. We follow British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and, where it applies, Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
Who we are and our Privacy Officer
Salik Foundation is a registered Canadian charity (registration number 777416629RR0001) at 13750 100th Ave, Unit #2010, Surrey, BC V3T 0L3, Canada. We are responsible for the personal information we hold. As PIPA requires, we have a Privacy Officer who oversees how we handle that information and answers questions and concerns about it. What we collect and why
Our website. Apart from the volunteer sign-up form described below, the website collects no personal information from you: nothing else you type is sent to us by the site, it sets no cookies of its own, it uses no analytics or advertising trackers, and it does not use your browser's local storage. Like any web host, our host Cloudflare keeps standard server logs of page and image requests, which include your IP address; we do not add anything of our own to them. See Third-party services below.
Free Qur'an requests. To request a free Qur'an, you simply email us at info@salikfoundation.com. The button on our page opens your own email application with a suggested subject line and a list of the details to include, such as your name and mailing address. You type those details in your own email account and send them straight to us. They never pass through our website, and our website neither sees nor stores them.
Volunteer sign-ups. If you sign up at salikfoundation.com/volunteer, we collect what the form asks for: your name, email address, phone number, city, province or state and country, whether you are 18 or older, how and when you would like to help, and why you would like to help. You may also choose to tell us whether you are a brother or sister, the languages you speak, any skills, experience or questions, and how you heard about us. We use these details only to contact you about volunteering, to match you with a team and role, and to keep a record of our volunteers. We do not add you to a mailing list, use your details for fundraising, or share them with anyone outside the charity apart from the service providers named below that store and deliver them for us. You give your consent by ticking the box before you send the form, and you can withdraw it at any time by writing to our Privacy Officer.
When you press send, your answers go from your browser to our Worker on Cloudflare, which checks them and passes them to a Google Sheet in the charity's Google account, where our volunteer coordinators read them. If the Sheet cannot be reached at that moment, the Worker keeps a copy for up to 30 days and delivers it as soon as it can, then deletes its copy. To stop automated spam, the Worker counts sign-ups from each connection for one hour using a one-way scrambled (hashed) form of your IP address; it never stores the IP address itself.
Email we receive. Email sent to info@salikfoundation.com is received in the charity's Google (Gmail) account. We use what you tell us only to answer you and to fulfil your request, and we keep the correspondence as an ordinary business record. By emailing us these details you are consenting to our using them for those purposes — answering you and sending your Qur'an — and for nothing else. You can withdraw that consent at any time by writing to our Privacy Officer, subject to any legal limits.
Donations. All donations are made through Zeffy (a Canadian donation platform), on Zeffy's website or in a Zeffy form that opens in a pop-up on our site. Our website never receives or stores card details, donor names or amounts. Zeffy issues official Canadian donation tax receipts on our behalf, and its own privacy policy governs the information you give it. If you click a suggested amount on our site, only that amount is passed to Zeffy in the link so it is pre-filled. Our site adds nothing else, though Zeffy will still receive your IP address and browser details when its form or page loads, as described under Third-party services.
Third-party services
Like most websites, ours relies on a few outside services. When your browser loads them, they receive your IP address and basic browser details as part of an ordinary web request, and some may set their own cookies:
- Cloudflare hosts the site (Cloudflare Pages) and runs a small server program of ours (a "Worker") that supplies the YouTube channel statistics, the donation amounts and the photographs shown on the page, and receives volunteer sign-ups. Your browser calls that Worker as the page loads or when you send the volunteer form, and Cloudflare keeps standard server logs of those requests, including your IP address.
- Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com) supplies the typefaces.
- YouTube shows the short video reels on the page. The thumbnails (i.ytimg.com) load with the page, and the first reel begins playing silently on its own when you scroll to that section, so YouTube's player (youtube.com) loads and YouTube and Google may set cookies even if you never tap play. If your device is set to reduce motion, the reel does not start on its own.
- Zeffy provides the embedded donation form and donation links.
- cdnjs.cloudflare.com and unpkg.com supply the animation libraries used on the page.
- Instagram: we link to our Instagram profile. Instagram is not contacted while you browse our site; it is only when you tap through to our profile that Instagram receives your details and may set cookies.
Our own server-side connections
Our Worker fetches the content on the page from the server side only: our own channel statistics through Google's YouTube Data API, our own photographs through the Google Drive API, and the donation amounts from Zeffy. It sends no information about you to any of them. The one exception is a volunteer sign-up: the Worker sends the answers you submitted, and nothing else, to the charity's own Google Sheet through Google Apps Script, as described above.
Photographs
The photographs on the site show our community events and Qur'an distributions. If you appear in a photograph and would like it removed, contact our Privacy Officer at info@salikfoundation.com.
How long we keep information
Volunteer sign-ups are kept in the charity's Google Sheet for as long as you volunteer with us and for a reasonable time afterwards as a record of our volunteers; ask our Privacy Officer and we will delete yours sooner. The Worker's temporary copy, if one was needed, is deleted once delivered and never kept longer than 30 days. Email you send us, and our replies, are kept in the charity's Google account as ordinary business correspondence for as long as we reasonably need them. Apart from these, the website stores nothing about you.
Who can see your information
Only the charity's staff and volunteers who handle Qur'an requests and correspondence see what you email us, and only those who coordinate volunteers see volunteer sign-ups. Google processes that email and the volunteer Sheet on our behalf as the provider of our Google account, and Cloudflare processes hosting, server logs and the delivery of sign-ups on our behalf. The other services listed above receive your IP address and browser details directly when your browser loads them, and use that information under their own privacy policies. We do not sell, rent or trade personal information, and we share it with no one else unless the law requires it.
Where your information is stored
Emails and volunteer sign-ups are held in the charity's Google account, and server logs (and any temporary copy of a sign-up) are held on Cloudflare's network. These providers may store or process information outside Canada, where it can be subject to that country's laws.
Children
Our website is for general audiences and is not directed at children. The volunteer form asks whether you are 18 or older; if you are not, we will ask for a parent or guardian's permission before you take part. If you believe a child has given us personal information without a parent or guardian's consent, contact our Privacy Officer and we will delete it.
Your rights under PIPA
Under PIPA you have the right to:
- Ask what personal information we hold about you and how we have used it.
- Ask us to correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete.
- Withdraw your consent to our use of the information you have sent us, subject to legal limits. If you withdraw consent before we have sent your Qur'an, we may be unable to complete the request.
- Complain about how we have handled your information.
How to exercise your rights
To exercise these rights, email our Privacy Officer at info@salikfoundation.com. We may ask you to confirm your identity and will respond within the time PIPA allows, normally within 30 days of receiving your request. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect your information. Volunteer sign-ups travel over an encrypted connection (HTTPS) and are kept in the charity's Google account, which is protected by that account's own security and seen only by the people who coordinate volunteers; email correspondence is held and protected the same way. No email system is completely secure, so please send only the details needed to fulfil your request.

Our site links to Zeffy, YouTube and Instagram. Once you leave salikfoundation.com, those sites' own privacy policies apply and we are not responsible for their practices.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site or the law changes. When we do, we will post the new version here and update the effective date at the top.
